What Is a Hair Transplant Graft?
A graft is a naturally occurring follicular unit containing one or more hair follicles. During a hair transplant, grafts are carefully harvested from the donor area and placed into areas affected by thinning or hair loss.
The number of hairs contained in each graft can vary from person to person. Therefore, graft count and total hair count are not necessarily the same thing.
How Is the Graft Count Estimated?
Assessment of Hair Loss
The extent and pattern of hair loss are evaluated to determine which areas require restoration. The hairline, frontal region, mid-scalp and crown may require different treatment approaches depending on the patient’s condition.
Donor Area Evaluation
The donor area, usually located toward the back and sides of the scalp, is assessed for available hair density and quality. The strength and availability of donor follicular units are important considerations when developing a transplant plan.
Recipient Area Measurement
The size of the areas requiring transplantation is considered to estimate how many grafts may be needed. The recipient area is where harvested grafts are strategically placed to create coverage and a natural-looking appearance.
Hair Characteristics
Hair calibre, density, texture and the number of hairs within individual follicular units can influence the overall appearance of coverage. For this reason, two patients with a similar degree of hair loss may require different graft numbers.
